Back when I was in university studying for my exams, like everyone else, I would drink coffee in an attempt to pull an all-nighter. But I’d often find that within less than five minutes I would be fast asleep. Sometimes I’d even make the coffee extra strong to try to make my eyes stay open – only to find that it made it worse. I couldn’t understand why, because I was always told that coffee – which is packed full of caffeine – would help one stay awake.

It took some time before I finally realized that I was an exception to the rule : coffee did not help me stay awake. In fact, it wasn’t even that I had no reaction – I had the OPPOSITE reaction, which was that it would make me fall asleep. I tried many different types of coffee, to no avail. The reaction is so fast that there was one time when I was drinking a cup of Nescafe in my hostel room, I had to beg my
roommate to switch off my computer (which I had switched on to do an assignment) for me because I was too sleepy to even get up off my bed to do so.

I thought there was something wrong with me, until I discovered another friend who had the same problem.

DIFFERENT STROKES FOR DIFFERENT FOLKS

Just because something supposedly works for most people, doesn’t mean that it would necessarily work for you. Each of us is wired differently, with different blood types, different genes, different medical conditions. This could apply to raw food or processed stuff, supplements or drinks, or even medicine. That’s why a diet shake may be able to knock off several pounds for some people, but have no effect for some. Or why some medications work for a majority, but a minor percentage regress.

I’m not a medical expert or a nutritionist, so of course I cannot pretend to tell you why or give you a list of factors or reasons. Whatever I am sharing here on my blog is based on my own experience and observations. These suggestions work for me, and I sincerely hope that they will work for you too. However bear in mind that what may work for me may not necessarily work for you, and there are some things you need to try and experiment to find out what does work for you.

All the best!
